Artist Statement
For the Panoramics and Urban Decay series, I have been exploring abstraction, producing work that is more about texture, color and composition , and less about representational subject matter.
I seek out industrial sites where I can shoot rusted metal or weathered wood where there is often rich visual content to contemplate. There is a fascination in documenting man-made materials, where once constructed, begin a never ending attempt to return to nature.I employ closely cropped images to remove any contextual reference, with the objective of creating a painterly abstract effect.
The goal is to challenge the viewer to appreciate the simple details in life by promoting the simplest elements of lighting, composition and treatment of the subject and present my view in a straight forward manner. No one will see these the same way and everyone will have a different interpretation.
The images are created with design in mind rather than a specific topic. When I embark on a shooting journey, I am drawn to a subject matter that will lend itself to a strong graphic framework. The goal is to make the viewer rethink his surroundings and see things that he could not have visualized before.
Special Thanks
None of this would have been possible without the help and inspiration of my dear friend and mentor, Maurice Henri. To an amazing photographer and teacher, thank you.You might not have created the monster but you are certainly feeding it well!
